Interview: Girls’ and women’s engagement in STEM training and professions in Latin America

While more girls have been in college today, they cannot also have equal opportunities to complete and reap the benefits of an education of these option. Biases, social norms and objectives influence the caliber of the training they get while the topics they learn, particularly when it comes to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Globally, just 35% of STEM pupils in advanced schooling are ladies and just 3% of females in degree choose information and interaction technologies (ICT) studies, in accordance with UNESCO’s worldwide report breaking the rule: Girls’ and women’s education in STEM.

This Q&A was conducted with Gloria Bonder, coordinator for the UNESCO Regional Chair on ladies, Science and tech in Latin America, prior to the International Day for Girls and feamales in Science.

What’s the present landscape of sex equality in technology, technology and innovation (STI) fields into the Latin American region?

A number far exceeding the global rate of 28% in Latin America, 45% of the region’s researchers are women.
